My favorite explanation is that intelligent civilizations are just incredibly short-lived compared to cosmic timescales.

The dark forest theory is terrifying, but it does explain why the universe might sound so quiet.

Could also be that we're early. Maybe most habitable planets just haven't had enough time to evolve technological life yet.
